Sample Activities from the R time Manual

Here is a sample Foundation Activity – group or class based activity

Approach: Class based

Resources: A carrier bag with an assortment of coloured objects (10) e.g. red apple; yellow banana; blue ball; green cube; orange orange; white hanky; black sock; silver coin; purple crayon; brown box.

Paired: Pairing cards i.e. colours

Introduction: Good morning (insert partner’s name).  How are you?

Activity: Show all of the objects to the children.  Put them back in the bag and ask the children to try and remember the objects with their partner. 

Plenary: Call out the colour and see if the children can respond with the associated object.  It can be done as a class competition.

Conclusion: I liked that (insert partner’s name.)

This is a sample Year 2 Activity – a ‘talking’ activity

Resources: A flower or some flowers that are nearly dead.

Introduction: Children introduce themselves.  The breakfast I like most is….

Activity: Show the children the flowers and ask them why they look like they do.  Get the children to come up with some answers.

Plenary: List the reasons the children give for why they think the flowers are nearly dead – key answer ‘lack of care’.

Question: How can we show that we care about our school/class. Children to discuss and feedback in their pairs.

Conclusion: I’m going to be really caring this week.

This is a sample Year 6 Activity – a ‘pretend’ activity

Resources: An empty box wrapped as a present

Introduction: My best birthday present was………

Activity: Children are told the box contains something important for the class. The children are given three clues.

1. It is in the box

2. It will help to make the class even better

3. It doesn’t have to be an object it can be a feeling/emotion.

The children then have to discuss what they think might be in the box.          

Plenary: Children share some of their ideas. 

            Box is opened and there is nothing in it. 

Question: Why is the box empty? (Answer – we want your ideas in the classroom, not in the box)  *Please note you can do this same activity with the class rules in the box.

Conclusion:That was really good today (insert partner’s name).
