Checklist for Reviewing an R time Session
The following checklist will help those using the programme to reflect on the success of their R time session:
Was R time timetabled for a session when all the children were present for the whole period?
Were the resources prepared?
Did you count how many children were doing R time? (to prepare pairing cards)
Did you greet the children? E.g. "Good Morning/Afternoon"
Pre-session talk - asking class about the rules: Did you thank the children individually for answers? (Even if it wasn't the rule you were looking for)
Did you remind the children to find their partner quietly?
Did you praise the children who said "Thank you" for the pairing cards? (If used)
Were the children reminded to place cards in the centre/at the end of the table? (If used)
Did you praise the children who sat quietly with their partner, ready to start the task?
Did you give clear, step by step instructions? I.e. Intro, arms folded, looking at me.
Did you make sure all the children understood the task?
Did you tell the children how much time they had to do the task?
Did you make sure the children all started at the same time?
Did you tour the class, discussing ideas and praising the children for working together?
Was the class told when the time was up?
Did you praise the pairs or the whole table who were listening carefully?
Did you praise and thank each child who volunteered and gave ideas and thoughts at the plenary?
Did you let the children know you enjoyed this R time session, praising and thanking them?
Did you let the children know what they achieved?
Did the children greet each other at the beginning and end of the activity?
Did you always use each child's name when you spoke to them?
Did you give the children thinking time?
When there was an odd number of children, did you use 'The odd one in' approach?
